Spring/Summer 2005

August 24, 2005 - ACAC BOD announces new coaches
Coach Garr Kerr the well-known and successful leader of the Ocean City C-Cerpents, has been named as the new Head Coach and Senior Team Coach for our Atlantic City Aquatic Club. "I have known Garr since he was a teen-aged swimming star and have enjoyed getting to know him well as an accomplished colleague over the past seven years. I believe with the support that ACAC can offer, Garr will achieve great heights as a USA Swimming Coach. His enthusiasm and dedication will definitely serve our program well." says Coach Sid Cassidy. Garr coached the Ocean City team successfully from 1999 through 2005. Many of his C-Cerpant Swimmers reached the Zone All-Star Level. Before coaching in Ocean City he was Head Coach of the Cape May Waves Program from 1993 to 1999. Coach Kerr was an All-American High School Swimmer while attending the prestigious Kiski School in Saltsburg, Pennsylvania. Coach Kerr was a NCAA Division III All-American while attending his alma mater Rowan University. Garr has been an open ocean swimmer since 1984 winning races such as; Miss America Pageant Swim, Wildwood Open Ocean Swim, Independence Bay Swim, Beschen-Callahan Races, International Swim Festival, and the Cape May Country Lifeguard Races. Garr takes the most pride in being a four-time individual swim rescue champion in the Goudy Rescue Races—a race he has won in three decades! (1988, 1989, 1997 and 2002).
Garr’s Philosophy on the Sport of Swimming: “Give Nothing Get Nothing—Give 100% Get 100%…Life is too short to be creating excuses for a lack of success….GO FOR IT!”.

Coach Dimitar Petrov has been named our new Silver Team Coach  & Administrative Assistant. He had been training the Junior and Intermediate Groups in Ocean City alongside Coach Kerr since September of 2003. He is from Bulgaria, where he spent most of his swimming career. He graduated from the National Sports Academy, Sofia, Bulgaria with degree of Physical Education and Sports Journalism. He also attained a degree of Business and Informational Technologies from Wheeling Jesuit University, Wheeling, WV. As a swimmer he was an accomplished World Champion of Marathon Swimming (1996), World Master Champion (1998), 4th place at US Nationals-25K (1998), and notched 15 NCAA Division II All-American titles (2000-2003). he also placed 7th at the European Championships in 1989, was a multiple Bulgarian National Record Holder (1988-93) and was ranked in the World Top 50 in 1988. Coach Cassidy says: "I have seen Dimitar mature from an outstanding international swimmer in both the pool and in open water into an outstanding age-group coach. His attention to detail and general philosophy to promote excellence will be a great asset to ACAC." Both new coaches will join forces with our returning staff, Coach Dave Wakeley (Gold) and Coach Tony Massa (Bronze).

Training scheduled to begin September 12 at ACHS
Mark your calendars to resume training at ACHS on Monday September 12. Projected training times are posted HERE. At our MLK site, Coach Dante Braxton will head up the coaching duties. Check back for the start-up date at that site.

ACAC WINS BOYS TITLE!

Coach Dave Wakeley with the new record-setters - Patrick Flynn, Thien Le, Isaiah Jackson & Quinn Cassidy

The 10 & Under boys from ACAC stole the show at the historic Golden Meadows Pool in Lancaster, Pennsylvania over the past weekend as they scored more than 500 points, won their age-group team award, obliterated the meet record in the 400-meter freestyle relay by 12 seconds and led our ACAC Boys team to our first ever Middle Atlantic Team Championship! In addition ACAC finished runner-up to Delaware Swim Team in the overall team division! Congratulations to all swimmers!   Full meet results are here Full team scores are here  Individual Age Group winners are
here. The old 10 & under relay mark of 5:03.08 was established by ACAC one year ago. This year, two members returned, Quinn Cassidy and Patrick Flynn to team with Thien Le and Isaiah Jackson and post a superb time of 4:51.81! In addition, the young Cassidy earned his second consecutive JO high point award, won six events and set an individual record in the 400-meter freestyle with a 5:13.11. Our 11-12 boys team swept all three relays and ended up runners-up to the Delaware Swim Team for the age group team award. We had many best times and are extremely proud of all swimmers AND extremely thankful to all the parents who VOLUNTEERED their time to help LAC and Middle Atlantic run the meet. The Dual Meet that never was ....
The 2005 Summer Dual meet season came to an unusual ending as our pool was closed for emergency cleaning late Tuesday afternoon ... our apologies to the Mantas and unfortunately, the meet was not able to be re-scheduled. ACAC ROCKS MIDS!
Wow!! Our senior level swimmers did an awesome job in the 2005 Middle Atlantic Senior Championships at Bucknell University from July 13-16. Coach Dave Wakeley led the team trip to his alma matter and brought home an incredible amount of best times and simply amazing swims. There were so many highlights it is difficult to name just one, but the topper came on the last evening with 15-year old Josh Wakeley's relentless 1500 freestyle of 16:15.43 - a 37 second drop - that qualified him for both the USA Swimming Junior National Championships this August in Irvine, California and the 2005 US Open next December in Auburn, Alabama! Congratulations Josh - You earned that one!
Take a look at the ACAC team reports HERE with best times are in bold.
